One of the things that we do here is help with the 8th grade English classes at Micah's middle school. It is a wonderful way to build relationships with kids, teachers, parents and others. There are also a lot of really good kids in the classes. Many are afraid to speak in English even during the class because they do not want to make a mistake and be made fun of in front of the others. I understand that but have long ago lost the fear of making a mistake with the language, it happens every day for me!
The difficult part is that there are a few kids that just do not care about anything or anyone, including themselves. They have no interest in learning anything and they are disruptive forces in the classes and in the entire school. One of the classes we are working with is excellent except for two boys. The class as a whole listens well and all are interested in learning something new, they are a pleasure to teach. These other two like nothing more than to disturb everyone and make it impossible for the others to hear, much less learn. The past two weeks they have been sent out of class.
I know that I can not do this, but there are times when I wish that I could use not what I learned at seminary with these two guys, but what I learned in Army Basic Training! That might get their attention! I don't like these two kids, but the Bible calls me to love them! How do I do this?
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) I pray that I can show even these two trouble-makers some of this fruit. It is not easy, to be sure, but it is part of the call for all who follow Christ.
By the way, I have a whole new appreciation for people who have chosen to be teachers as a career. We are in these classes only four hours a week and that is more than enough sometimes. For those of you who do this every day for more than 180 days of the year, thanks for your work, your care and concern for the kids you teach and for your patience. Blessings to all of you as you continue to work with kids each day.
